Running in the Wienerwald

We wrapped up our summit here in Vienna yesterday, and today was a day to be a tourist and check out all the local sights. I mentioned to one of the marketing folks here in Austria (Nina) that I was going to go running, and she mentioned that she & her boyfriend go running on Saturday mornings and asked if I wanted to join them! Of course I was excited to, and she mentioned that they ran out in the forest around Vienna, known as the Wienerwald.

The Wienerwald is a forest that runs nearly all the way around Vienna (except the portion that borders the Danube) as you can see here (the green arrow points to the center of Vienna, and you can see the Danube running down the right hand side):

They picked me up at the hotel at 7:30 and we headed north out of the city. We had a great run, though I have to say that Nina’s boyfriend is in MUCH better shape than I am. The hills were murder! We actually ran for about 1:20 and reached one of the highest peaks around Vienna. It was a bit foggy but still beautiful up in the hills.

The trail was really nice, winding its way through the forest and along the ridgeline. The air was pretty crisp (I think it was in the 30s this morning) but it was nice to be out of the city for a while. On our way back to the car, we ran through some of the vineyards that also border much of Vienna and the Wienerwald.

Next stop: Brunch and shopping at the Naschmarkt!
