Four odd sights in Austria

As I mentioned in an earlier post, one of the most startling aspects of walking down the streets of Vienna is the incredible proliferation of lingerie stores and images of scantily clad (or completely topless) women in their advertisements. Along the main pedestrian shopping street – Kartner Straße – there must be at least 10 lingerie stores. Even the main department stores have huge windows full of mannequins in bras & thongs or other sultry apparel. Now, don’t get me wrong – I know we’ve got a Victoria’s Secret in every mall around the US – but this was practically every where you turned. And apparently the Viennese really buy a lot of lingerie – it seemed like every store was full of shoppers! Coupled with the nudity in the print advertisements it was quite a contrast to the more puritan-inspired US…

This was not shocking, but more of a curiosity. We came across a great bakery / chocolatier, Demel, in downtown Vienna. Each day they would make these ornate and elaborate cakes for their window displays. Here was my favorite!

The horses in Vienna seemed to get cold, so they had these interesting hats for their ears…

And finally, this just made me laugh. Not quite the translation I think they were going for…
