Bike to Work Day #1

Update: I realized I forgot to actually post this last week (it was in my drafts area…)

Every year, Bike to Work day comes and goes and I think “I really should get off my butt and actually bike to work.” Well, I ran into a kindred spirit at eBay this year, and we’ve decided to give biking to work each week a shot! Today was our first official bike to work day – our “trial run” if you will.

The morning ride actually went pretty smoothly! If you’re at all interested in the route we take, here’s the directions from Mountain View to the eBay campus in San Jose:

Take Grant south toward Foothill
Left (south) on Foothill
Left (east) onto Homestead
Right on De Anza
Left on Bollinger
Right on Williams
Cross Winchester
Right on S. Daniel Way
Left at Westfield, cross over 17 on the Westfield-Downing POC
Right on Bascom
Left into eBay

Not bad! Door to door it was 16.4 miles from home, and took us just over an hour to get there (we met up on Foothill at 7:30am.) Traffic wasn’t too bad except for some nasty trucks on De Anza, but thankfully that leg was pretty short.

Now, the ride home today was TOUGH! For those of you not in the Bay Area, we had some serious winds today! I think San Jose clocked in at over 20 mph winds. If you don’t cycle much, 70% of your power output is used to overcome wind resistance – and when you’re heading into a 20 mph headwind it feels like it’s doubling the work you have to do! But we made it home (again, a little touch-and-go on De Anza) in about an hour since we knew the route a bit better and picked up the pace.

All in all, it was a great way to get in over 30 miles, and some good training for Wildflower – which is in 2 1/2 weeks! I’ll be back on the bike next Tuesday… we’ll see how long we can keep it up.

And remember everyone – the Bay Area Bike to Work Day is May 17th!
